Helm for Sale This is a 15th Century sallet with a sparrow's beak visor. I made this helm years ago from a photo in a book called '1200 Years of Helmets' or something similar (it's been a while since I've seen that book). The original visor was closed, and I decided that I would try for the same shape out of barstock. The stock itself started at 5/16" and I ground the front facets flat.
This sallet is fully SCA combat legal and will hold up to the worst of combat conditions. The bowl is 12 gauge mild steel, with the rear lobster tail in 14 gauge. The brow piece is 16 gauge and supported by the bowl underneath.
The rivets along the back are decorative, but they were on the original so I included them. The visor is functional, although I riveted it closed. If those two rivets were removed, the visor would raise although there is no catch so would not be combat worthy until one was added.
It is a slightly large helm with an interior diameter of 26" and a generous opening. It is also somewhat heavy at 12 lbs. I'm rather thin, but found that I could wear it for fourty minutes or so before my neck would notice it. I think it would best compliment a fighter of larger build. It will take enormous punishment and still look good.
I fought (on and off) in this helm for a season before getting another, so it has a couple of very minor dings on it. I'd almost forgotten I had it when I came across it in my garage. I am selling this helm $350 plus shipping ($20). The helm is ready for me to ship immediately upon payment. If paying by check, I will wait for it to clear. If you would like the helm faster, a postal money order is perfect. If you are not happy with it for whatever reason, I will happily refund payment (minus shipping) upon return of the helm. If you are interested in the helm or have questions, e-mail me at tristan@thelostboys.org.
